Communication Strategies for Leaders: Advocacy and Conflict Resolution

Clear, effective communication is essential in STEM settings. This is the case whether you're presenting complex ideas, advocating for yourself and others, or navigating interpersonal dynamics. Yet even well-reasoned messages can trigger defensiveness, especially in high-stakes or conflict-prone conversations, making it challenging to be heard. This workshop will offer practical tools to reduce defensiveness, increase clarity and influence, and strengthen your ability to communicate under pressure. Through applied strategies and structured practice, you'll build confidence and skill for handling difficult conversations, skills that are critical for leadership, collaboration, and career advancement.

*The workshop with ECRs will also cover the basics of networking and how to communicate your value.

Dr. Tara Fortier (National Institute of Standards and Technology)
is a project leader and physicist with nearly 20 years of experience in the Time and Frequency Division, where she has developed laser systems that interface with atomic clocks to advance the realization of optical atomic time and conduct tests of fundamental physics.

In addition to her work in physics and metrology, Dr. Fortier is an ICF Level 2 certified leadership coach, specializing in organizational performance. She is dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM, with a particular focus on creating opportunities for underrepresented minorities and women.
